Problems for Art Sociology  

The author takes a wide sweeping look at the literature on the problems in the sociol-ogy of art published in the last decade. Analyzing the writings in this field up to the work of T. Adorno, he arranges the existing material with an attempt at defining how we stand with regard to sociology of art. At the same time an attempt is made to indicate a possible way out of the impasse of this discipline by emphasizing certain works, the methodological value of which have not been fully taken advantage of in the sociological research on art.

The Encounter with the Ego in Art

The present study deals with the problem of the creative individual and is based on a broad view of artistic material from the early Middle Ages to the present day. The author tries to find out in what way the creators in keeping with the customs and conventions of the given age, or in opposition to them tried to express their own personality; how they tried, in more or less refined ways – through signature, hidden or obvious self-portrait, a particular sign, indi-vidual style, a particular expression – to leave some trace of their existence, their artistic con-ceptions, their feelings.

The paper, based on detailed research in archives as well as in depth studies on the lit-erature of the age, casts a great deal of new light not only on the art of Volterrano, but on the relationship of the artist and his environment as well. Thorough analysis of the documents and literary references brings out new perspectives in the research on the art of Tuscany in the first half of the 17th century.

Venus or Judith? On Heroising the Feminine Image in Lucas Cranach and Artemisia Gentileschi

The interest of the author of this study is directed toward the problem of femininity in art. On the one hand in the works of Lucas Cranach he tries to show the relationship between the man-artist to the themes in which the woman plays the basic role. On the other and in the works of Artemisia Gentileschi he tries to show certain aspects of painting which link the figure of the woman-artist and the world around her. This philosophic-sociological study is part of a book in preparation dedicated to the problem of femininity in art and women artists.

The Perception of Architecture: the Municipal Residential Buildings in Vienna. Judgments on Them Between the Two World Wars and After the Second

The sociologist of art looks into how the municipal architectural complex was and is looked upon. It was supposed to be, in its conception, the city authorities’ answer to the hous-ing needs of a wide section of the population of Vienna in the 1920’s. An interesting analysis of the changing judgments with the passage of time on this architecture shows at the same time the political and social conditioning of popular architecture.

W. R. REARICK - The Portraits of Jacopo Bassano (pp. 99—114)

The author reconstructs Jacopo Bassano’s activity in the field of portraiture, he takes a boad look on his portraits, among which some still don’t have a certain attribution. The author approaches them in the context of the painter’s output and changing style. As a portraitist, Jacopo Bassano cannot be forced into any convenient category – he was an independent and probing observer of the major current of his time. The essay is an important addition to our knowledge of Jacopo Bassano’s paintings.

JÓZEF GRABSKI - The Group of Paintings by Tintoretto in the «Sala Terrena» in the Scuola di San Rocco in Venice and Their Relationship to the Architectural Structure (pp. 115—131)

This study focuses on Tintoretto’s art in the last decades of his creative activity. The author reconsiders the group of his paintings for the “Sala Terrena” in the Scuola di San Rocco in Venice. He stresses and analyzes their relationship  to the architectural structure of the interior: the openings in the “Sala Terrena” define the light sources in Tintoretto’s paintings. Through the specific relationship of each of the paintings to the architecture as well as of the pictures to one another in the group, the whole creation tends toward a harmonizing unity in keeping with what will subsequently become the Baroque idea of “concinnitas”.

The film director reconsiders the multilayer type of image and examines the question how far the degree of dense concentration which multilayer images possesses in comparison with normal pictures can be utilized as a possible regulative in the realm of imagery. The author compares the multilayer process with the way in which our psychological apparatus functions.

The considerations of the author as to the technical possibilities, limits, and dangers of the layer method define precisely how far strictly technical aspects may affect the semantic and artistic work of Titus Leber.

ERWIN RINGEL - Schichtungsmethode und Tiefenpsychologie (pp. 159—161)

The Multilayer Method and the Psychology of Depth

The comparison of the work of Titus Leber against the background of the tradition and culture of Vienna, his multilayer method on the one hand and Freudian psychoanalysis on the other indicates on the one hand the sources of his artistic creativity, and on the other hand points out the methodological possibilities of research on the psychology of art begun in its day by S. Freud, and widely criticized by art historians. Modernized methods and the results of psychological research since then, indicate that in this direction are still to be found great possiblities for further research.
