The rich artistic output of Erwin Czerwenka (1887–1970) follows the most important artistic trends of the first half of the 20th century. A painter and draughtsman, experienced teacher and stained-glass designer, he actively participated in Cracow’s artistic life, engaging in social activities of the local artist’s union.
In his painting, Czerwenka remained faithful to the Polish tradition of colourism. An outstanding landscape painter – having studied with such eminent Polish artists as Wojciech Weiss, Leon Wyczółkowski and Teodor Axentowicz – he initially worked under a profound influence of the Cracow school of landscape painting, and thanks to his numerous artistic travels to Italy, France and the former Yugoslavia, he enriched his palette with the luminous colours of the Mediterranean. Yet, his favourite subject matter that he painted most often was the Pieniny Mountains, the Tatra Mountains and the Baltic coast; Czerwenka’s landscapes of the Podhale region and the seaside attest to his love of the local countryside and his sensitivity to the changing light and weather conditions. Endowed with extraordinary decorative talent, he tried his hand at wall painting, achieving mastery in designs for church stained-glass windows, mostly in Małopolska (Lesser Poland) region. The characteristic feature of Czerwenka’s artistic achievement, both in easel painting and stained glass, was his respect to the art of Young Poland (a Polish equivalent of Art Nouveau), which delighted the eyes and sought to make life more beautiful.
The present book on the artist covers only a small part of his artistic output. Much of his legacy still remains to be discovered and will complement our awareness of his oeuvre. It is hoped that this publication will fill a significant gap in the history of Polish 20th-century art.
