Erwin Czerwenka artysta malarz – a New Book Published by IRSA

The rich artistic output of Erwin Czerwenka (1887–1970) follows the most important artistic trends of the first half of the 20th century. A painter and draughtsman, experienced teacher and stained-glass designer, he actively participated in Cracow’s artistic life, engaging in social activities of the local artist’s union.

This book, compiled under editorship of Dr Krystyna Czerni, is the result of collaboration between several authors: Dr Stefania Krzysztofowicz-Kozakowska has characterised the painter’s artistic development, Dr Krystyna Czerni has rescued from oblivion a very interesting painted wall decoration of the Pasieka (‘Apiary’) mead tavern in Cracow, whose iconography was in line with the ideological trends of the 1930s, while Dr Józef Szymon Wroński has compiled the first complete catalogue of stained-glass windows designed by Erwin Czerwenka. A chronology of the artist’s life, based on a rich family archive, has been reconstructed jointly by Maria and Krystyna Grabski, the granddaughter and great-granddaughter of Erwin Czerwenka.

We hope that this publication will fill a significant gap in the history of Polish 20th-century art.
