This volume, edited by Federico Berti, brings together five essays devoted to the recently rediscovered ‘Flagellation of Christ’ by Passignano, and revisits the issue of the ‘Massimi commission’. The studies offer new interpretations and seek to clarify the debate surrounding the various commissions by Massimi for Passignano, Cigoli and Caravaggio. The works of the three artists and the archival data are analysed from various angles, offering fresh perspectives.
The papers written by leading scholars, Federico Berti, Marcantonio Massimo, Gianni Papi, Gianluca Poldi and Rossella Vodret, collected in this book, offer significant insights into the issue of the so-called ‘Massimi competition’ and the presence of works by Passignano in the collections of the famous Roman family. However, the debate over whether the competition actually took place remains open.
